What Is NDIS?
NDIS stands for National Disability Insurance Scheme. It is a disability program designed to help people with any significant impairment lead independent lives. This program also aims to reduce the amount of support the participants need from others in their daily lives so they can become more self-reliant and achieve their goals. It was started by the Australian government in the year 2020, and as this program continues to grow, more people are interested in becoming a part of it.

NDIS provides a wide range of support services to its participants, and funds are provided in three different categories of budget. New participants may find it confusing to manage the funds offered under this program. In this blog, we are going to discuss different ways to manage NDIS funds so you can make the most of this support program.
Plan Management
The first way to manage NDIS funds for the participants is plan management. This method allows you to hire a plan manager to manage your funds under this program. They are responsible for tasks like ensuring that service providers are paid, and all the invoices are received. Your plan manager or plan partner allows you to leave your NDIS funding on them, and they make sure that you spend it on relevant support. Without a plan manager, it can get difficult for a new participant to understand which support is more important than the other. It also allows you to stay stress-free as the plan manager takes care of the funds.
Self-Management
Another method of funds management in NDIS is self-management. You can choose this method if you don’t want to hire a plan manager or any professional help for your funds. It allows you to manage your NDIS funds as you want. You will be responsible for paying for every service you receive and keeping a record of expenses.
This method might sound more independent, but one needs to be extremely confident to take on this responsibility. This method is even harder for new participants because they are not well-versed with the NDIS plan and payment methods. It is better for new participants to choose help for funds, and as they grow more confident and knowledgeable about the program, they can manage the funds themselves in the future.
NDIA-Managed
The third method of fund management in NDIS is NDIA-Managed. NDIA stands for National Disability Insurance Agency. The agency conducts plan meetings with participants and develops NDIS plans to help them reach their full potential. In this method of fund management, the participants can allow the agency to manage their funds on their behalf. NDIA will pay the service providers and support the participants receive and will ensure that their funds are used for good.
However, there’s a drawback to this method: you cannot hire an unregistered provider if your fund is managed by NDIA. Unregistered providers can only be hired if your funds are self or plan-managed. There are also some services that only participants with NDIA-managed funds can access, so if you want to hire a registered provider, this method might be the most suitable for you.
