Speaking of car ownership, as a vehicle owner, you feel more intimidated when you try to transfer ownership of the car. However, while this feeling is mutual across all folks, transferring car ownership is a very easy procedure.
The process basically involves the brand new owner of the Vehicle, the previous owner, and a pile load of required documents that require verification and attestation. When can you transfer the ownership of the vehicle?
An individual may transfer the Vehicle RC or ownership during the following times:
● Auctioned
If the Vehicle is auctioned to pay the debts off, the new owner is required to make sure that every vehicle name transfer formalities are fulfilled.
● Vehicle reselling
In case you are reselling a vehicle, it is a must to transfer ownership in the purchaser’s name. The vehicle ownership transfer allows the RTO to record information regarding the new owner and its Database.
● Death

Documents required to transfer car ownership
Irrespective of the circumstances, a car’s ownership transfer needs specific documents to be submitted to the respective state RTO. Following are some of the documents needed for car ownership transfer:
● Form 28
It is a compulsory document and a grant of a certification of No-objection from the RTO. This form is a must when there is an interstate transfer of vehicle ownership.
● Form 29
This Form is there to notify the RTO of the transfer of ownership of a motor vehicle in case of a normal sale.
● Form 31
It is an information application and ownership transfer in the nominee’s name or person succeeding in the possession of the car.
● Form 32
This form is basically an application for ownership transfer when the Vehicle is acquired in a public auction.
● Form 30
It is the intimation application and ownership transfer application of a Motor vehicle.
● PAN card
PAN cards of both seller and purchaser are a must in case of Vehicle transfer. If there is no PAN, Form 60 and 61 can be used Alternatively.
● PUC certificate
The certification of Pollution Under Control is also needed to transfer the ownership of the car in such scenarios.
● Registration certificate
The Vehicle’s original R.C. is also needed in all instances.
● Proof of address
To transfer a car’s ownership, you will also need proof of residence, which may be in the form of an electricity bill, utility bill, or ration card.
● Car insurance certificate
A valid car insurance certificate is a must in order to carry out the ownership transfer of a car in all the scenarios mentioned above.
● Form 35
This is the form that is a must for termination of hypothecation during the time of ownership transfer of the car if it was bought under hypothecation.
● Death certificate (in case of death)
When the transfer occurs because of the death of a car owner, a death certificate in relation to the registered owner is also a must!
Cost of ownership transfer
The ownership transfer cost of a bike/car changes depending on the RTO. This may also change based on the age of your Vehicle or car. A transfer charge for automobile ownership can range between 300 INR to 2000 INR or even more. Here is a broken-down list of the charges:

Transfer of ownership in the same state
If the purchaser and the seller are from the same state, you can just follow these simple steps:
- Get forms 29 and 30 from the relevant state’s RTO.
- Fill out forms 29 and 30 with the seller’s signature.
- Submit the filled-out forms, the registration certificate, the PUC certificate, the insurance certificate, and the proof of address of both the purchaser and seller to the RTO.
- Pay the fee for the ownership transfer.
- As soon as the RTO verifies all the documents, the registration certificate will be transferred to the purchaser’s name.
Ownership transfer interstate
If the purchased and the owner are both from different states, you can just follow the steps below:
- Firstly, you need to get the NOC from the car’s RTO.
- Following that, you need to take the form 28, form 29, form 30, and form 33 from the concerned state where the purchaser resides.
- After that, you are required to fill out forms 28, 29, 30, and 33 and sign them along with the car’s seller.
- Once you are done with that, you are required to submit the forms you filled out along with the documents required to the RTO where the purchaser resides.
- Pay the fee of inter-state ownership transfer.
- As soon as the RTO verifies all the documents, the certificate of registration will be transferred to the purchaser’s name in the new state.
