449views

Solid-State Drives are the generation of storage devices used in computer systems. Compared to traditional hard disk drives, SSDs use much faster flash-based memory. So, upgrading to the latest SSD is one of the fastest and easiest ways to enhance the speed of your computer system. In this review, we will review the spec and feature details of the Transcend 32GB TS32GSSD500 SSD.

Transcend let us review their modern high-performance MLC Based SSDs (32GB) and (256GB) capacity. These hard drives feature a SATA interface and a 2.5-inch form factor. The storage devices can be easily fitted into a laptop, but for this post, we will be using a desktop computer that supports SATA2 drives.

We will start this review by discussing the specifications, features, and performance. Then, we will carry out a minimum number of benchmarks if compared with the OCZ Agility, laptop hard disk, desktop hard disk, and against other solid-state drives for tests. Then, we will discuss a number of real-world tests.

What’s Inside the Box?

There are some differences among both the models (32GB and 256GB). Both the devices are enclosed in packaging, and the detail about the contents is given below.

  1. Transcend 2.5-inch SATA2 Solid-State Drive
  2. A quick installation guides
  3. 4 mounting screws
  4. Transcend product guide
  5. Warranty guide

On the bottom, you can see the serial numbers, model numbers, SATA connectors, and power handlings, along with several other certification logos.

Testing

The test equipment used in the review includes Crucial 2GB DDR3 PC3-8500, Intel Core i5 2.66GHz 8MB cache, Sapphire HD4350 DVI graphics card, Samsung 2TB F3 5400RPM HDD, and Corsair ATX 450W power supply unit. Each test was carried out on a similar SATA port on the motherboard. The port uses an Intel p55 chipset express, and we have SATA native enabled mode in the BIOS. When switching solid-state drives, we used a similar SATA cable and disconnected it from one device, and connected it to another. The cable remained attached to the port for all tests.

I/O Performance

Having an SSD with a blazing fast read and write speed is no less than a blessing. If you aim to use your latest storage device to save and run your OS, then the device must cope with several small random files. So, we believe that it is vital to test how many random files a drive can handle at a time. For most users who are running a mainstream PC, anything more than 1000 I/O per sec would be sufficient and can provide a simple and smooth-running system.

Final Words

In this review, we have included all the important details regarding the device which a user requires in order to make a buying decision. The IOMeter tests show that every device has some limitations and strengths to keep it functioning for a longer lifespan. Although the 256GB model performed extremely fine in the sequential tests, it fell way behind compared to most SSDs in other tests. One thing to mention here; all of the tests were synthetic and can only be used as a guide to show how 2.5-inch Solid State Drives will function in real-life use.
